Every Monday, at 6.30am in summer and 8am in winter, Jeff Spinks arrives at the club to welcome those who wish to play in the weekly Seniors Competition. The number of competitors varies between 18 in winter and 30+ in summer.
Volunteer Jeff succeeded Frikkie van der Merwe and is keeping up the excellent work of his predecessor. Jeff is going into his third year as organiser, keeper of the finances and recorder of weekly results – winners, 2-clubs, Nearest the Pins, etc. He is ably assisted by Piet Hugo who takes the scorecards and keeps a running calculation of the most consistent performers against handicap. This summary is also used in the selection of the league team. Membership, currently at 56, is restricted to male members of Paarl Golf Club, over 50 years of age and incurs a fully paid up membership fee of R50 pa. The weekly competition fee is R20.
The club participates in the Winelands Senior League. There are 10 match-play fixtures per year against Stellenbosch, Devonvale, Strand, Bellville, Durbanville, Parow, Kuilsriver, Helderberg and Somerset West. Green fees are the same for all clubs and are agreed annually. PGC has traditionally paid league green fees and provided league shirts every two years.
The committee organises an end of year function and prize-giving which for the past two years has been held at Simondium Country Club – it is the right size and the food is good. The beginning of the year function is usually a spit braai and held at the BOMA.
Jeff says that one of the strengths of the seniors is that games are played properly, eg. putting out, and according to the Rules of Golf and play is relatively fast moving. Formats are varied week by week with prizes for first and second places in the competitions plus nearest the pin and two clubs. “And they are a nice group of people!”
Well done Jeff and your team – your members appreciate all that you give back to the game.
